TMJ & Craniofacial Pain

TMJ or the joint between the skull and lower jaw is prone to damage like any other joint of the body. This may lead to severe pain radiating to the craniofacial complex involving ear, head, neck or shoulders diverting the attention of the clinicians towards the other common causes of similar pain like cervical spondylosis or migraine.

Evaluation of the complex relationship between Temporomandibular joints (TMJ), teeth, airway, masticatory muscles and the dental occlusion is the key to rule out this lesser know and commonly missed out cause of unexplained and untreatable facial pain or headaches.

TMJ disorders may present from mild on and off pain in the ear region to severe continuous pain in the jaws and head. Such disorders might be associated with restricted mouth opening or lock jaw leading to difficulty in chewing food. One must be aware of the symptoms of this disorder, so that early steps can be taken to cure the problem.

Dental Sleep Medicine
